Lead roof work by T. J. Copping Roofing Ltd Roofing

Lead sheet has been used to great effect on roofs for centuries and with good reason! It is estimated that about 70% of the lead sheet currently produced is used for flashings and weatherings to be used in the construction details on roofs that protect vulnerable joints in buildings, such as where roofs meet with walls or the roof pitch changes. Of the remainder, about half is used as the main roofing material on new housing developments and the remainder is used on various restoration projects.

The advantages of lead sheet as a roofing product are that it is very long lasting, weather resistant and extremely flexible. The flexibility of the lead it vital when used in flashings and other details that need to be formed around the contours of the roof and movement joints that all building have.

Repair or replace the lead work on your roof

Generally if lead roofing, cladding or flashings are in a good state of repair with maybe a few minor splits, then it is no problem for us to carry out the appropriate repairs. However, more serious lead damage will require careful consideration to the renewal of the leadwork. Before we begin any lead repair or renewal work, we assess certain factors such as:

  1. the condition of the lead
  2. how long it is likely to last
  3. any work required to adjacent materials
  4. inherent design faults in the roof.

There may be other additional factors that we would consider before deciding upon the right course of action, these could be:

  • inadequate or worn out fixings
  • obvious signs of corrosion either on top or on the underside of the lead
  • the use of oversized or incorrect sized pieces of lead
  • conditions such as heating, insulation which could affect the roof decking
  • the poor location of fixings restricting the normal thermal movement of the lead
  • the use of unsuitable roofing underlays
  • the detection of serious ripples or splits in the lead

The decision on whether to repair or renew could also be influenced by certain other factors. A parapet or central valley gutter lead lining may be in a reasonable condition and when considered in its own right, worth repairing to extend its life by several more years. But if the nearby slated or tiled areas are to be renewed anyway, then the cost of renewing the lead gutters at the same time would be well worth considering, after all, why spoil the ship for a ha'p'orth of tar?
