Why have a slate roof?

Slate roofing tiles are chosen by many dbecause they are a natural stone product, giving the roof a unique and beautiful appearance. Add to that the durability of slate and you really can't go wrong. Below are a few of the most popular reasons why homeowners and housing developers choose to install slate roofing tiles on their homes.

  1. Everyones favourite reason these days seems to to opt for building and roofing materials that are environmentally friendly. It is believed that roofing waste accounts for more than 5 percent of the total waste that ends up in landfills across every year. Since the majority of that roofing waste can be attributed to asphalt shingle roofing that needs replacement every 20 or 30 years, it is easy to see the positive environmental impacts of installing a roof that is going to last for a century or even more.
  2. Then ther's the safety aspect, slate roof tiles are fire resistant. It is believed that slate roofs are one of the most fire resistant roofs that can be built. Unlike many other roofing materials, slate tiles are completely fire proof. This is clearly a massive plus when it comes to preventing fires caused by sparks from fireworks in November, or from house fires on neighbouring buildings.
  3. Slate roof tiles literally last a lifetime, well actually much longer! Slate roofs can be built to last at least a hundred years. In reality, 150 years is a perfectly reasonable expectation of a slate roofs lifespan if the roof is properly constructed in the first place. Consider that mahy other roofing systems are designed to last 20 or 30 years before needing replacement, food for thought!
  4. The appearance of natural slate tiles is another reason to opt for this wonderful roofing material. Let's face it, slate tiles are beautiful! There just isn't a roofing material available that has a nicer appearance. Also, slate roofing tiles offer oodles of choice for homeowners, coming in varying sizes and thicknesses, as well as a wide range of stunning colours, including grey, green, purple, black, red, and even an attractive mottled tiles that have several colours mixed together.

Time to repair or replace a slate roof?

Slate roofs will need repair for two main reasons:

  • the slates themselves have broken or become damaged
  • the surrounding slate flashings have deteriorated considerably.

Therefore, the repair and restoration of slate roofs requires professional knowledge about replacing slates and their flashings. Just as importantly, finding the source of a leak and understanding why it happened is critical to the successful repair of a slate roof. So don't leave it to chance, call in a professional company like T. J. Copping Ltd.

Slate repair is pretty straight-forward: you locate the defective slates and replace them with matching slates. Use the correct fastening techniques and the right tools and everything will be hunky-dory. Flashing repair is another story. When flashings wear out, and they will (the slates usually outlast the flashings), they have to be replaced too. This is simply a matter of removing any slates that are covering the flashings, pulling out the old flashings down to the bare roof deck, then replacing the flashings with new metal. Then replace the original slates back into their original positions. This is all routine work for professional slate roofers.
